Bumpy Bar Codes
The auto and aerospace industries have spurred the development of a new barcode, with the goal of direct marking of parts with machine-readable code to permit automated tracking of parts, collection of data on the manufacturing process itself and inventory control of finished goods. This code is embossed or debossed on a surface and is read by using differences in height, rather than contrast, to distinguish between bars and spaces. The code can be used where printed labels will not adhere, or will be otherwise destroyed by a hostile or abrasive environment. They can be painted or coated and still be read. They can be made a permanent feature of a part, making mislabeling impossible. These codes are called, quite appropriately, bumpy barcodes, or 3D barcodes.
